WHO CAN WRITE IN ANCIENT JAPAN?
In Ancient Japan, only people of high ranking, or people who are legally able to be educated are able to script, read, and understand the 3 types of Japanese writing. These people are normally the Emperor, his high-ranking servants and all nobles and leaders of religion (eg. Priests) Many people (especially) boys would illegally trade to kind priests for the ability to learn the skill of writing and reading. They could then apply for a high-ranking spot in the emperor’s palace. But the emperor wasn’t so dumb. He would search through the applicator’s family’s background, and if he came from a low-class family, the applicator would immediately be either burnt alive, or executed.
